Comfort, functionality and freedom – everything you need on a gravel ride.

For many gravel cyclists, style comes second (unlike in road cycling). What matters most are practical solutions. That’s why gravel bib shorts with cargo pockets are becoming an essential part of longer rides.

During our winter training camp in Gran Canaria, we had the perfect chance to test the new model of cargo bib shorts – Finest Gravel. The terrain was ideal for testing – physically demanding, with elevation gains we rarely tackle back in Poland. So, what are our thoughts on these cargo cycling shorts? Will you ever go back to classic bibs after trying them once?

Why choose cycling bibs with cargo pockets?

1. Easy access to essentials
During long gravel rides, quick access to essentials is key. The spacious cargo pockets on the thighs let you carry everything you need – without reaching for your backpack or jersey pockets.

For example, you can stash your phone (key for influencers), an energy bar, a credit card, or lightweight arm warmers. Even on bumpy terrain, accessing these items remains safe and convenient.

This means snack breaks, photo stops or clothing adjustments become quicker and more efficient.

2. Better weight distribution
Storing everything in a jersey pocket or backpack causes the load to concentrate in one spot, which can lead to back strain – especially on long-distance rides.

With side cargo pockets, weight is more evenly distributed across the body. This improves balance and reduces fatigue on your back.

In short, this design boosts comfort and stability – not just uphill, but also on descents and technical gravel sections.

3. Perfect for bikepacking and ultra races
Cargo gravel bibs are also ideal for ultra-distance cycling and bikepacking. They offer extra storage without needing to add extra bags.

During multi-day rides, you can easily carry gels, documents, cash or a small multitool. And having quick access to these without stopping is a huge advantage in a race.

Most importantly, these solutions reduce gear on your frame or back – improving aerodynamics and the bike’s handling during quick manoeuvres.

In summary: cargo pockets are more than a trend – they make a real difference on long-distance rides.

What to look for when choosing gravel bib shorts?

  1. Fabric: breathable, elastic, and abrasion-resistant. In our experience, it should come from certified European suppliers. Asian alternatives often lack UV and mechanical durability.
  2. Chamois: designed for 6h+ long distances, e.g. Dr Pad DOC 89
  3. Pockets: deep, tear-resistant and stable during riding. They can be made of mesh (as in the Finest Gravel model) or a solid fabric.
  4. Fit: high waist, elastic leg grippers and braces that stay put – even during dynamic gravel riding.
  5. Color: the darker the better – ideal for dusty, muddy terrain.

Before any new product appears in the Luxa store, it goes through a long testing process – and we’re not talking about a quick spin around the block. Each model is first tested by our team of cyclists in a range of conditions – from scorching road rides to long gravel routes and intense indoor trainer sessions.

“We test every possible detail – from how the fabric performs in contact with the saddle to how stable the pockets are on bumpy gravel. Only the gear that really works makes it to launch.”

Dominik – Luxa Product Manager

The Finest Gravel bib shorts were tested by our team for over 30 hours of riding – with fully loaded cargo pockets, on gravel and asphalt, for 3, 6, even 8 hours at a time. We looked at every detail – how the chamois behaves after multiple washes, if the braces stay comfortable, how the legs move and how well the pockets actually hold your gear.

Before releasing any product, we must be 100% confident in its performance. These tests determine whether a model enters production – or goes back to the design table (which happens more often than you’d think).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do the side pockets interfere with pedaling?

No – in the Finest Gravel model, the pockets are positioned to avoid contact with the legs. Regardless of your pedaling angle, the contents stay securely in place and do not shift.

What can I store in the pockets?

Your phone, energy bars, documents, lightweight arm warmers or gels – you can easily fit 2–3 items per pocket. We recommend avoiding sharp objects, as they may damage the fabric or your skin.

Are there other color options?

At the moment, the Finest Gravel model is available in black. You can check other colors and gravel cargo models on the Luxa website here.

What if I damage the bibs in a crash?

All products purchased in our official Luxa store are covered by our Crash Replacement program, valid for 1 year from purchase. If your bibs are damaged in a fall, you’ll get 50% off a new pair of the same model (or its closest available equivalent). Just contact our support team and send us photos of the damaged product.

Are these bib shorts good for bikepacking?

Absolutely! Bibs with cargo pockets are ideal for multi-day bikepacking trips with a loaded bike. The Italian-made chamois by Dr Pad is a reliable companion on such adventures.

How should I wash my cargo bib shorts?

Wash at no more than 30°C, ideally on a gentle cycle for sportswear. Use mild detergents – no softeners or bleach. Do not tumble dry or place on a radiator. Make sure the pockets are empty before washing. After washing, lay the bibs flat in a well-ventilated area. Proper care ensures lasting comfort and durability for many seasons.
